The ‘superwoman complex’

It is okay – be kind to yourself

So here we are.  Generation Y and Z; the Millennials are bringing forth a generation of their own.

During this period of time we have seen England’s second female Prime Minister. Moreover, we’ve seen the USA’s first black President re-elected, the Suffragettes’ 100th anniversary and the #metoo campaign. Equal pay and mental health are high on the current affairs agenda. We all understand what it means if someone says they are vegan. The advent of social media means we have a constant stream of information resulting in a smaller, more accessible world. Times are changing but there’s still a way to go.

Today, there are still too many women with negative accounts of their birthing experiences, but it does not have to be like that; having a Doula and continuity of care can make the world of difference to an expectant family. Change starts with each of us, love matters and birth is a really good place to begin.

Knowledge is power

As women, we often suffer from the ‘superwoman complex’; having to be all singing, all dancing, all the time.  Living a constant cycle of busyness. Our bid to be all knowing and all achieving can be detrimental to our health and our connections with loved ones.

If we stop and pause, we can realise that this is not always necessary and, that sometimes in stillness there is the most clarity.

Pause, breathe, and savour the moment, adopt a mindfulness approach

Today’s woman is so much more than a mother and wife.  Whilst significant, these are only aspects of the friend, activist, elder, grandchild, daughter, sister, niece, student, professional and adult that we are.  We are all of these things and so much more.  The ‘superwoman complex’ is indeed layered in complexity.

Mothering the Mother is all about putting the woman’s needs first.  And moreover, that putting ourselves first is a healthy pattern to adopt in our busy lives, where we are constantly providing for and meeting the needs of those around us.  Putting yourself first is not selfish, it is selfless; if you are ok, those around you are more likely to be ok. Hence the strap line ‘better you, better me, better us

It is impossible to pour from an empty cup

It is okay – put yourself first
